Tornado Tears’ RSN Sandown Cup defence is back on track after a successful trial at Sandown Park this afternoon.
It was his first appearance on a racetrack since finishing unplaced in the final of the group 1 Association Cup at Wentworth Park on Saturday 20 April where he tore a section of his left hind pad. Tornado Tears trialled alongside kennelmate Extreme Justice, leading all of the way and running 6.15, 15.75, 30.48 before being pulled up on the arm. Trainer Robert Britton was happy enough with the times especially given the wintry conditions, but more pleasing was the fact that Tornado Tears showed no ill-effects from his recent injury setbacks.
“He seemed to go well but the main thing was to lift the foot at the end and see there’s no more damage,” said Britton following the trial.
“It looked as though it was perfectly healed before the trial and after the trial it’s exactly the same so I’m coming away happy. I would say absolutely healed no problem at all.”

Tornado Tears is one of the country’s most popular greyhounds. Affectionately known as ‘Batman’ by his legion of fans nationwide due to his distinctive markings, Tornado Tears has won 23 of 35 career starts including four group 1 titles and amassed $645,235 in prize money. He holds the track records at Wentworth Park, Cannington and Albion Park, and the second fastest times ever run at Sandown Park and The Meadows.
Tornado Tears is the current $1.80 favourite for the $250,000 event, and will become the sixth greyhound to win multiple RSN Sandown Cup titles if successful on Friday 24 May.

Nominations for the RSN Sandown Cup – the world’s richest race for stayers – along with group 1 sprints the Sapphire Crown and Harrison-Dawson, will close at 11am on Monday 13 May.
