Grenfell takes Chancer over 715m

Dyna Chancer has opened the odds-on favourite for the Lizrene Speed Star (715m) following the release of fields for the highly anticipated match race series this morning.

One of the key talking points leading into the series was which event the versatile Dyna Chancer would nominate for – the 595m Race Callers or the 715m Lizrene. At the close of the qualifying period on Sunday, Dyna Chancer headed the 595m series with a slick 33.847 and was second over 715m with a time of 41.627. After much consideration, trainer Corey Grenfell opted to step up to 715m.

“It was definitely a tough decision,” he said following the box draw.

“We’ve kept him fresh – that’s why we dropped back to the Meadows 600m (where he won in a slick 34.16) – with the idea of going over the 715m. He seems to go better first up over the trip.”

The club ran a poll across its social media channels asking fans which series Dyna Chancer should run in, with more than 67% of respondents favouring the 595m journey.

“We had a few people said we should stick to the 595m because of (fastest 715m qualifier) Embye. But I’m competitive so was happy to take him on.”
As it turns out, Dyna Chancer will enter the Lizrene as the highest seeded greyhound after Embye, whose brilliant 41.565 qualifying trial

Dyna Chancer has opened the odds-on favourite for the Lizrene Speed Star (715m) following the release of fields for the highly anticipated match race series this morning.

The club ran a poll across its social media channels asking fans which series Dyna Chancer should run in, with more than 67% of respondents favouring the 595m journey. However Grenfell resisted popular opinion and decided to stick with his original plan

“We had a few people said we should stick to the 595m because of (fastest 715m qualifier) Embye. But I’m competitive so was happy to take him on.”

As it turns out, Dyna Chancer will enter the Lizrene as the highest seeded greyhound after Embye, whose brilliant 41.565 qualifying trial propelled him into early favouritism, didn’t nominate for the series. Trainer Ruth Matic found the dog to be ‘proppy’ on Wednesday morning, telling thedogs.com.au that, “after talking the owners, (we) decided not to run him.”

“We are devastated at the moment. “He has been virtually injury fee his entire career until now. (We) don’t think it is too serious but will know more later today.”

Following the release of the fields, Dyna Chancer opened the $1.60 favourite to win the Lizrene. He will jump from the inside box against Boom Down in the second match of the series, the greyhound Dyna Chancer defeated by 1¼ lengths on 14 March and saw both greyhounds set their respective qualifying times.

Despite having just six race starts to its name, Midnight Dare opened favourtie for the Bill Collins Speed Star (515m) after running 29.173 in her first look at Sandown Park in a qualification trial on Sunday 21 April. However she will have to be at the top of her game having drawn on the outside of highly touted New South Wales sprinter Feral Franky in its match. Feral Franky – himself a veteran of just 17 starts – clocked 29.271 in its trial on Sunday and is aiming to become the second NSW trained sprinter to win the Speed Star following Smart Missile’s victory in the inaugural series.

The Speed Star brings together the country’s fastest chasers in a series of two dog match races with $190,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Now in its eighth series, the Speed Star is one of greyhound racing’s most exciting events. Popular with both punters and fans alike. Greyhounds qualify for the series based on times recorded at Sandown Park from 1 January 2019 to 28 April 2019. Matches are randomly drawn with the greyhound drawing box 1 racing against the greyhound drawn in box 2, box 3 against box 4 etc with the greyhound running the fastest overall time being crowned the winner. Greyhound drawn in an odd numbered rug will jump from the inside box (box 1) while greyhounds drawn an even numbered rug will rump from the outside (box 3). Prize money is awarded to the winner of each match, with additional prize money awarded to the greyhounds running the three fastest times overall.

An hour long preview of the three main Speed Star events – the Bill Collins (515m), Race Callers (595m) and Lizrene (715m) will shown on Sky Race 2 (Foxtel ch527) at 6pm on Wednesday 1 May with an encore screening at 10.15am on Thursday 2 May.

All matches will be shown on Sky Racing 2 which will be unlocked and free to Foxtel subscribers. First match will jump at 5.24pm and entry to the track is free.

TAB.com.au has a range of markets across all Speed Star events and matches, as well as a range of specials including fastest first splits, winning time lines and odds and evens.
