Scene is set for tonight’s group 1 double

Group 1 racing returns to Sandown Park tonight with the Harrison-Dawson and Sapphire Crown!

The Harrison-Dawson is shaping as one of the races of the year. The eight finalists have combined to win over $2.1m and enter the $145,000 final with solid group race pedigrees and outstanding Sandown Park form.

Heading the market are group 1 champions Shima Shine and Tiggerlong Tonk, who meet in a group final for the 9th time in their glittering careers. Both were outstanding in their respective heats last week but will have to be at the top of their game in the final, with Lakeview Walter, Fernando Bluey and Equalizer just some of the names looking to cause an upset.

For the girls, the Sapphire Crown is an intriguing affair with Warrnambool Cup winner Qwara Bale setting the time standard in her heat and has opened favourite despite drawing box 6. 2020 runner-up Aston Silk is primed to go one better in 2021, with Crazy Cool, Junk Food Junkie and Shima Classic keen to make the most of their inside draws.

Rounding out the night are four heats of the world’s premier distance race, the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup. Zack Monelli blew his rivals away on his Sandown Park debut last Thursday night, breaking a sectional record on his way to outright RSN Sandown Cup favouritism, his cause helped further by drawing box 1 in his heat.
